The Scarecrow
原文
Narrator:Dorothy put on the silver slippers which fit perfectly. Then she and Toto set out on a long journey to the City of Emeralds and the Great Wizard of Oz along the yellow brick road. After she'd walked several miles, she saw a Scarecrow high on a pole in a cornfield. His blue suit was stuffed with straw. Dorothy looked into his painted face and then in surprise, she said to Toto,
Dorothy:“Toto, that Scarecrow winked at me! And look, he is nodding. I am going over and say hello to him.”
Scarecrow:“Good day! ”
Dorothy:“Did you speak?”
Scarecrow:“Certainly, how do you do?”
Dorothy:“Huh, pretty well, thank you. How do you do?”
Scarecrow:“I'm not feeling well. This pole is stuck up my back. If you will please take me off the pole I shall be greatly obliged to you.”
Dorothy:“All right.”
Scarecrow:“Oh, thank you very much. Without that pole up my back, I feel like a new man. Who are you? And where are you going?”
Dorothy:“My name is Dorothy, and I am going to the Emerald City to ask the Great Oz to send me back to Kansas.”
Scarecrow:“Where is the Emerald City?”
Dorothy:“Don't you know?”
Scarecrow:“No, indeed. I don't know anything. You see, I am stuffed with straw, so I have no brains at all.”
Dorothy:“Oh, I'm awfully sorry for you.”
Scarecrow:“Do you think, if I go to the Emerald City with you, that the Great Oz would give me some brains?”
Dorothy:“I don't know, but I'd be happy to have you come with me.”
Scarecrow:“I don't mind being stuffed with straw, because I can't get hurt. But I don't want people to call me a fool, and with no brains, how am I ever to know anything?”
Dorothy:“I understand how you feel. Well, come along and we'll see what Oz can do for you.”
Scarecrow:“Thank you.”
Toto:“woof, woof, woof.”
Dorothy:“Toto, stop that. Mr. Scarecrow, don't mind him. He never bites.”
Scarecrow:“Oh, I'm not afraid. There is only one thing in the world I'm afraid of.”
Dorothy:“What is that?”
Scarecrow:“A lighted match.”
