Until the latter part of the nineteenth century, the United States had not given
birth to an architectural tradition worthy of international merit. The work done in
California by innovators like Charles and Henry Greene struck occasional
worthwhile notes but it was not sustained. Then a school of creative architecture
arose in the Midwest, entered in Chicago.(芝加哥學派) The greatest of all
these Chicago structure, and masterials and avoided all historical allusions.
Beginning with a distinctive spatial theme, each building grew into its exterior
sculptural form. Using Richardson's(他所設計的三一教堂 Trinity Church 在波士
頓 Copley Square ,剛好在貝聿銘設計的 John Hancock Building 的對面) earlier
rustic, shingle houses and incorporating Beaux-Arts(布雜藝術) composition,
Wright epitomized his prairie house concept with the 1909 construction of the
Robie House(羅比之家-屬芝加哥大學產業) in Chicago.
