當然，單字量少，絕對是大問題。
但一個人，窮其一生，
也不可能背完一百多萬個生字，
還有說不定幾千多萬個衍生字。
那怎麼辦呢？
我在《經濟學人》看到一小段文字：
The Vatican and child abuse
A bid to hold te Catholic leadership responsible
for paedophile priests.
Though priests caused the scandals, it is the number
of nuns that is plummeting.
首先，paedophile 這個字，
因為很惡劣，所以不在這裡討論。
實際上，我從來沒背過這個字，
但因為常常在 CSI, 法醫檔案, FBI files
「聽」到這個字，
所以當我看到時，認得出來，
但拼不出來。
其次，
the number of nuns that is plummeting.
"plummeting" 這個字我也不認識，
但這句話的關鍵字不在 plummeting,
而是 "number"（數量），
所以我的直覺理解 plummete 是：銳減、驟減。
is plummeting : 正驟減中。
所以，只要一直看符合自己程度的英文書，
有些生字，用生活經驗、理解力推一下，
就可以閱讀。
偶爾查字典，
大部分我都記不起來，
除非在短期內遇到兩三次。
最好聽過聲音幾次，
「聽」比「看」更容易記住。
閱讀，只要生字不多，
基本上都可以幾乎不查字典，
一直看下去，
才能享受閱讀的樂趣，
英文能力才會長長久久。
